Lapis Lazuli Antique Gold Bangle Bracelet

Attributed to John Brogden. 18K yellow gold opening bangle bracelet adorned at the top with an opening tube for secret messages, embellished with two lapis lazuli spheres

• Created circa 1860-1870 in the antique style, attributed to John Brogden (1820-1884)
• Ratchet clasp
• Wrist circumference : approximately 16 cm
• Gross weight : 27.05 grams
• Very slight dents in the interior of the bracelet
• An example very similar to our bracelet was part of the Tadema Gallery collection. This bracelet is reproduced on page 261 as number 428 in the fabulous book Tadema Gallery London, Jewellery from the 1860’s to 1960’s by Beatriz Chadour-Sampson / Sonya Newell-Smith (hats off to you ladies), published in 2022 by Arnoldsche.
• Perhaps the name John Brogden doesn’t ring a bell? You might be more familiar with the Castellani family.
  A 19th-century goldsmith and jeweler, John Brogden descended from a lineage of artisans established in London at the end of the 18th century. His family first partnered with the Garlands (possibly related to the Parisian branch), and later with the Watherstons—a collaboration that allowed Brogden to complete a full seven-year apprenticeship.

  This era was marked by a rediscovery of the great ancient sites of Greece and Mesopotamia—Ur, Mari, and the mythical Nineveh—as well as rapid industrial development across Europe. World’s fairs and international exhibitions of industrial arts became platforms for sharing ideas, unveiling new designs (like those seen on our bracelet), expanding knowledge, and celebrating European craftsmanship.

  Bracelets like this one were showcased at the 1855 Paris Exposition and the 1862 London International Exhibition, where Brogden’s firm exhibited and earned prestigious medals
